Concerns about congestion at Toongabbie Bridge have been raised by our community for a long time. Your voices have driven this project forward and together, we’ve secured $28 million in State and Federal funding.
As your Federal Member of Parliament, I'm committed to getting this upgrade finished – we know how much improving traffic flow matters to families, workers, and local businesses. The work will be focused on easing congestion, as well as refurbishment of the bridge itself.
2026
In January, I caught up with State Government to discuss next steps for the project.
Cumberland Council has completed the detailed design phase of this project, and City of Parramatta is not far behind. The community has been invited to provide feedback directly to Cumberland Council's plans, and this input will be considered prior to finalising plans: HAVE YOUR SAY

City of Parramatta's design and approvals remain on track for completion by mid 2026, with construction expected to start in early 2027. I will keep advocating to bring this timeline forward so the community can see the benefits sooner.
We know many want to see action faster. Whether it’s traffic control, drainage, flood risk, street lighting or road safety, it’s important the Councils’ design and planning work is done properly so that they get the upgrades right.
2025
Transport NSW’s 2023 analysis confirmed what locals already knew – congestion is made worse by the intersections on Wentworth Avenue.
In June, I met with Parramatta and Cumberland Councils for an update. In response to Transport NSW's 2023 analysis, Parramatta Council will replace the Fitzwilliam Road–Station Road roundabout with traffic lights, and Cumberland Council will widen Wentworth Avenue near Cornelia Road to add a second southbound lane. Parramatta Council will also widen Wentworth Avenue to provide two southbound lanes leading into the intersection.

We are also working with Transport for NSW on refurbishing the bridge. The project will repair rusted metal, replace worn side panels, and address general wear and tear that compromises the structure’s safety.

We know many in the community feel strongly that the bridge itself should be widened, and we understand those concerns. We are in discussion with both Councils and Transport for NSW about the possibility of widening the bridge over the footpath. The cabling beneath the bridge means this work will require detailed investigation and could form a later stage, subject to feasibility and funding. We want to assure you we are examining widening options closely while ensuring the current works can proceed without delay.
